THE PROM, 2023
The Prom offers a heartfelt, fun, and camp story of a normal gay romance, mixed in with the eccentric lives of Broadway actors. The fight for LGBTQ+ rights is central to the show and exists within a rustic, bland school where homophobia thrives. To contrast the dull, monotonous tones, the Broadway group comes in with colorful, sparkly costumes that give a sense of eccentricity and camp. As the play continues on the color begins to flourish within the town, all coming to an explosion of color at the Finale in a celebration of LGBT love.
The awkwardness of a first gay romance was a central part of the design to me and is often represented by the explosion of the rainbow flag everywhere all the time. When some people find out they’re gay for the first time and come out, they tend to fill their lives with as many rainbows as possible. It’s a little embarrassing but sweet. Just like your first crush or first relationship. Since our main romance is the first romance between two lesbian teens, I thought this would be a perfect fit.
